This top-down puzzle game starts with a screen featuring a number of red cogs at different parts of the screen, and a grid of pegs (which become less complete on later levels). Your task on each level is to use a number of gears of one of 3 different sizes to ensure that all the pegs are linked together. All this has to be completed before the engine overheats.

Making life harder are two creatures with the peculiar name ‘Poffins’. One of these goes around removing pegs, and the other causes the engine to overheat further. They can be shot out of the way, or have gears placed over them to stop them.

There’s also a bonus round, which is a fruit machine, only with cogs and other things from the game rather than fruit.

Description from the packaging. (US) :

Gear Works is the most unique puzzle game to hit the market in years. In Gear Works, you will connect various gears together in order to transform Twelve Wonders of the Ancient and Modern World in to time pieces. You build the inner mechanisms by linking together gears of various sizes and colors while racing against time and fighting against friction. Watch Out for the Poffins, two-gremlin like creatures, that will torment you by rusting the gears and by breaking off the gear mounting pegs. Gear Works will test your reflexes and challenge your mind.

Game Features: Three unique gear sizes, various gear types, dozens of puzzles to solve, bombs to blow up incorrectly placed gears, oil to lubricate rusted gears, and a gun to shoot the pesky Poffins off the play area.

Link bonus gears together and earn coins so you can try your luck with the slot machine between levels. The slot machine pays off in either points or needed supplies.
